Late 15thth century marble-inlay mosaic of Temperance, one of the four Cardinal Virtues, along with Justice,Prudence and Fortitude, that are portrayed in the marble pavement of the interior of the Cathedral of Siena. Temperance is depicted as a woman pouring a liquid from one jug or amphora to another. This represents the dilution of wine with water,or perhaps the blending or synthesis of opposites. Plato identified the four cardinal virtues in the 4tht century BC in the Protagoras, later they became part of the Christian tradition | |
