District heating. Artwork of the underground pipes used to distribute the steam or heated water in a district heating system from the local power station (left) to the nearby buildings and businesses (right). Once generated,the heat is stored in a medium such as water or steam and piped out through insulated pipes (red). The cooled water or steam is returned (blue pipes) to the power station to be reused. This system is more energy-efficient than having individual boilers in houses. It can be used to heat both large and small settlements
