Begun by Dionysius the Elder about 400BC,to defend Syracuse from Carthaginian invasion, the Castello Eurialo is considered the most important military construction of ancient Greece surviving today. It is built on a ridge about five miles north of Syracuse and served as part of the outer defences of the ancient city. It is thought that the defences were strengthened by Archimedes in the late 3C in his role as Heiron II's General of Ordnance | |
