View looking north from Syracuse across the petrochemical industrial complex of Priolo Gargallo towards the active volcano of Mount Etna. This area is of great importance to the Sicilian economy with the agricultural produce from the fertile volcanic soils of the lower slopes of Etna as well as the output of one of the most complex industrial sites in Europe with its several oil refineries, chemical plants, mineral deposits and many other industrial installations. In 2010 the Archimede solar power plant was inaugurated. However, due to uncontrolled chemical discharges it is now a high environmental risk area with not only the death of marine life but due to air pollution, the evacuation of some local residents. The tourist attraction of Etna is a particular hazard being one of the most active volcanoes in the world close to an area of high population in the city of Catania | |
