COSMOS region in Sextans. Deep-field image obtained by the VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) telescope. This image is part of the widest deep-field view of the sky ever obtained in infrared. The effective exposure time was 55 hours, and the original mosaic combined more than 6000 images. VISTA is located at the ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. This part of the sky, located in the constellation of Sextans,is being studied by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in its Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) project. More than 200,000 galaxies have been identified here. Image published in 2012 | |
