Shark-skin-inspired antibacterial surface. Close-up of 'Sharklet' an antibacterial material whose surface structure was inspired by the microstructures found on the surface of shark skin. The tiny,diamond shaped microstructures,known as denticles,found on shark skin are known to deter bacteria and other microorganisms from establishing a colony. The rough surface requires more energy output from the microorganism to grow on which in turn inhibits their growth. The Sharklet film can be applied to high-touch surfaces such as restroom doors and toilet handles or coated on medical devices and other germ-free equipment
