Sally Ride (1951-2012),US physicist and first American woman in space in a T-38 jet three days before her first space flight. Ride was studying for her PhD in physics when she answered a newspaper advertisement for NASA astronauts. She was accepted as an astronaut candidate in January 1978. After completing a years training,Ride worked as a communications officer and on the team that developed the shuttle's robotic arm. In 1983 she was chosen to be the mission specialist for mission STS-7 aboard Challenger. On the 18th June 1983 Ride became the first US woman in space. She flew on Challenger again,on mission STS 41-G,which launched in October 1984,before the shuttles were grounded after the Challenger disaster in 1986. Ride retired from NASA in 1987.
