| African plants,17th-century artwork. Three known plants are named (left to right): kassia (cassia or Chinese cinnamon),colekasia (Colocasia,the elephant-ear plant),and datura (thorn-apple). This engraving is from 'Africa' (1670) by the London-based Scottish cartographer John Ogilby (1600-1676). This 767-page atlas describes the known lands and peoples of Africa,with 57 plate engravings of maps and artworks.
