Christopher Addison,1st Viscount Addison,(1869-1951),British physician and politician. Addison began his career as a private physician and anatomy lecturer. His belief that only government could overcome the effects of poverty on health led to a move to politics in 1907. He was elected as a Liberal MP in 1910. During the First World War he was Minister of Munitions and oversaw a great improvement in working and living conditions for munitions workers. In 1919 Addison became the first Minister of Health,overseeing the introduction of council houses,expansion of the National Insurance system and improvements in healthcare. Addison lost his seat in 1922 and switched allegiance to the Labour Party. Between 1929 and 1935 he was in and out of Parliment,before being promoted to the House of Lords in 1937,where he remained until 1951 | |
