Hydrangea petiolaris, the "climbing Hydrangea",is a native of Russia,Korea,Taiwan and Japan. In common with most members of the species,it produces large flowerheads consisting of flower of two types. In H. petiolaris, the flowerhead is corymbose; individual flowers are held more or less in one plane due to differential growth of the stalks ( pedicels ) supporting them. Most of the flowers are fertile, but lack petals. Around the edges of each flowerhead are a few sterile flowers with four white petals. These serve as a visual attractant to insects, although the insect's reward for pollination comes from the many fertile flowers, each of which produces nectar at its centre,in addition to pollen. H. petiolaris is a hardy garden plant, suited to North-facing walls in the Northern hemisphere,to which it attaches itself by aerial roots | |
