Claude Francois Dorothee Jouffroy (1751-1832),French inventor, engineer and pioneer of steam-powered marine propulsion. He designed and built what has been claimed as the first successful steamboat, the Pyroscaphe, which he briefly demonstrated on the River Saone to the citizens of Lyon in 1783. Though he had proved the feasibility of using a steam engine mounted on a boat,he was unable to develop it further due to lack of support and finance from the French Academy of Science.Commercially successful steamers would not be developed for another 20 years. Then steamboat development moved away to Scotland and America | |
