Oustalet's chameleons (Furcifer oustaleti) mating. Like all reptiles, chameleons have a combined urinary, faecal and reproductive opening called the cloaca. During copulation in chameleons, the male mounts the female and places his cloaca adjacent to hers, and extends one of his two penises (hemipenes). If fertilisation is successful, around 60 eggs are laid a few weeks later, hatching after an incubation period of around a month. This species, endemic to Madagascar,is also known as the Malagasy giant chameleon. It is one of the largest chameleons, males reaching lengths of nearly 70 centimetres. Photographed in Madagascar | |
