Polished ruin marble. Ruin marble is a kind of limestone or marble that contains light and dark patterns, giving it the impression of a ruined cityscape. The brown colouration comes from oxides of iron and manganese that have infiltrated the rock in ground water through small cracks. The cracks were introduced by deformation and diagenesis of the rock as it compacted. Specimen from the valley of the Arno River in Tuscany,Italy | |
