Common blue damselfly (Enallagma cyathigerum). Common blues are amongst the most abundant damselfly species in the UK. They grow to a length of around 3 centimetres and are found around water surrounded by lots of vegetation. The adults can be seen from mid-May until the beginning of autumn, although individuals will only live as adults for around 12 days. Damselflies are predators of other insects, often catching prey mid-flight. They spend much of their life as aquatic larvae, where they feed off other small invertebrates. Photographed in the UK | |
