Pyroccocus furiosus archaea, artwork. Archaea are single-celled organisms that are similar to bacteria but have been found to have higher organism characteristics. This was discovered when sampling the DNA of bacteria. A new domain of Archaea was set up because of the differences found. The thin strands or filaments are flagella. Each organism has a group of flagella at one end of the cell that is used for locomotion. P. furiosus is a hyperthermophile and it is only found in very hot water. At temperatures below 70 degrees Celsius it will freeze and die. It is found in hot water vents under the sea that are subject to great pressure and oxygen depletion. This archaea uses sulphur for respiration instead of oxygen | |
