Lathe,16th-century artwork. Lathes are machines used to rotate an object about an axis while cutting or drilling. This is a type of pole lathe,using the tension of a bow string (top) to pull upwards on a cord that is pulled downwards to start the lathe spinning. This is figure 7 from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The Latin title of the book was 'Theatrum instrumentorum et machinarum' (Theatre of machines and instruments). It was originally published in around 1572. This engraving is from the 1582 edition,published in Lyon by the publisher Barthelemy Vincent
