Haemopneumothorax. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a section through the body of a 44-year-old after a horse riding accident,showing a large haemopneumothorax (dense,centre left) in the right lung (left) and major subcutaneous emphysema. Haemopneumothorax is an abnormal collection of blood and air (or gas) in the pleural space that separates the lung from the chest wall. This gas can place pressure on the lung,squashing it and reducing it's capacity,therefore interfering with normal breathing. Subcutaneous emphysema occurs when air (or gas) is present in the subcutaneous layer of the skin
