Elephant prepollex toe,CT scan. Computerised tomography (CT) scan of an adult elephant's prepollex. This 'sixth' toe,or predigit on an elephant's foot was originally dismissed as a curiosity of elephant anatomy. In 2011,the zoologist John Hutchinson,Professor of evolutionary biomechanics at the Royal Veterinary College,UK,published a paper describing how the structure, was used to help to support the elephant's extra bulk and weight. Data from the scan will be used to create virtual models of the animal. Photographed in 2012 | |
