The Egyptians believed in Cosmic order. and measured time by the annual cycle of the Nile and the daily progress of the sun across the sky. This is illustrated in a series of vignettes from the Book of the Dead, the papyrus of Ani. 1275 BC.In Egyptian mythology the Sun created not only light, warmth and growth but ruled over the Earth, the Sky,and the underworld. The sun disk was known as the eye or body of Ra,the Sun god. Here, the hawk-headed Ra is seated in his solar bark on his journey across the Sky. He looks towards the large sun-disk. Ra,as usual,is portrayed with a sun-disk symbol above his head and on his knees he has the Ankh, the sign of life. On the prow of the boat is depicted the eye of Horus.
