Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253),composite image. This spiral galaxy, around 70-80,000 light years across,is 11 million light years from Earth,in the constellation of Sculptor. It is among the closest galaxies to the Local Group that contains our galaxy. NGC 253 is a starburst galaxy with very vigorous star formation and very dusty spiral arms. This image, which combines optical and infrared data, was published in 2011. It was obtained with the OmegaCAM on the VLT Survey Telescope (VST),at the Paranal Observatory,Chile. This image was processed with the VST-Tube system developed by A. Grado et al,at the INAF-Capodimonte Observatory | |
