El Caracol,Mayan observatory,at night. El Caracol was a structure used by the Mayans to study the heavens and celestial movements. It was built sometime after 600 AD,and was mainly used to mark the passage of the seasons and longer periods by its alignment with the stars. The Maya were an ancient Mesoamerican civilization that inhabited southern Mexico and nearby areas for thousands of years from the second millennium BC to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century.
