Hardness testing. Probe of a scanning indentation mechanical microprobe (SIMM) used to perform a microhardness test. The probe within the apparatus applies a known pressure to the surface of a material at several points. The surface is then scanned and measurements of the indents taken. This is combined with the load data to give a hardness value for the material. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory,Teddington,UK | |
