Vesta asteroid, compositional map. Dawn spacecraft image of Vesta,a large asteroid measuring 530 kilometres in diameter. Colours correspond to wavelength ratios of radiation detected by the spacecraft and indicates the variety of rock types present on the surface. Red indicates wavelengths at 750 nanometers (nm) divided by 440 nm,blue indicates regions of wavelengths of 440nm divided by 750 nm. Green indicates areas at 750 nm divided by 930 nm and it is thought this corresponds to the iron-rich mineral pyroxene. The black circle at centre is a region of no data. Surrounding it is the massive Rheasilvia crater, which measures 467 kilometres in diameter and a central mound that reaches 23 kilometres high | |
