Stem of a greenhouse-grown grapevine,Vitis vinifera, covered with brown scale,Parthenolecanium corni. Scale insects are members of the order Hemiptera. They feed on the sap of plants. The "scale" is a shell-like covering produced by mature females when they settle to feed. The insect lives beneath the scale, and produces a waxy secretion into which it lays its eggs in batches of up to 2000. The hatched nymphs leave the shelter of the scale and feed on leaves during the summer, returning to overwinter on stems and branches. Scale insects are widespread and difficult to eliminate by chemical methods due the wax they produce. Females reproduce parthenogenetically;the males are shortlived and rarely seen. The picture shows old stems of a grapevine with persistent brown scales attached | |
