A female Garden spider,Araneus diadematus,at the centre of her web in a garden hedge,Norfolk UK,September. The garden spider is the most familiar of the orb-web spiders, easily spotted in Autumn. Females are larger than males, and may reach 12-15mm in size, compared to 8mm for males. The picture shows the spider in process of eating a small fly. Prey items are recovered from wherever on the web they became trapped, then wrapped in silk and carried to the centre of the web.
