Chinese trumpetfish (Aulostomus chinensis). This elongated fish inhabits coral reefs in the tropical Indo-Pacific region, from east Africa to the islands of the South Pacific, where it feeds on small fish and crustaceans. It is related to the seahorses, and like them it has its jaws fused to form a tube. It takes its prey by sucking it into its mouth as if through a drinking straw. It may reach a length of around 80 centimetres. Photographed in the Lembeh Strait,Sulawesi,Indonesia | |
