Seaweed male sex organ. Light micrograph of a section through a conceptacle from a male of the seaweed bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosus). The lining of the conceptacle consists of multi-cellular hairs called paraphyses. Fertile paraphyses branch into tips that bear antheridia,which yield flagellated antherozoids. These male reproductive structures are released through the ostiole (hole at top of conceptacle) to the sea,where they are chemotactically attracted to the conceptacles of female seaweeds to fertile the ova (female reproductive cells). Magnification: x37 when printed at 10 centimetres wide
