Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (M83),infrared image. This spiral galaxy is 14.7 million light years from Earth,in the constellation of Hydra. This image was obtained with the IRAC instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Infrared radiation of increasing wavelength (decreasing temperature) has been color-coded blue, green, and red. Some of the hottest regions of star formation are reddish-white dots along the spiral arms, with the most vigorous star formation in the galaxy's centre. This infrared view shows a complex structure of dust (red) along and between the spiral arms. Image published in 2011 | |
