This scene is based on infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. Comets smashing into the young rocky planet bring water and organic chemicals to its surface,providing some of the conditions needed for life. Eta Corvi is about the right age,about one billion years old,to be experiencing a bombardment of comets similar to what happened to Earth in our own solar system (the Late Heavy Bombardment).
