ALMA antenna transportation. ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas that combines data by interferometry,making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. Here,one of the 12-metre diameter ALMA antennas is being transported on its 28-kilometre journey from the Operations Support Facility (OSF,background,elevation of 2900 metres) to the Array Operations Site (AOS) at an elevation of 5000 metres on the arid Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. The transporters have a top speed of 12 kilometres per hour when loaded. Photograph published in September 2009
