Marcasite is an iron-sulphide (FeS2),similar to pyrite, but falling in the orthorhombic crystal system (pyrite is cubic). When fresh,it has a bronze metallic gloss, like pyrite or somewhat lighter, but with time the gloss fades to duller brown. Marcasite's crystal habitat is typically tabular, with twinned spearhead and cockscomb shapes often occurring, which in this sample have formed a small globule of radiating crystals. This specimen is from the Normandy coast,France, and measures 33mm in diameter | |
