Titanic ice field seen by the Carpathia. RMS Titanic,the largest ocean liner ever built at the time,was reputed to be unsinkable. However,during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. The RMS Carpathia rescued the survivors on 15 April,and obtained photographs of the nearby large ice field that is thought to have included the iceberg Titanic struck. Titanic had received iceberg warnings from other ships in the area,but not all these reports were passed to the captain. Calm moonless conditions meant the lookouts saw the iceberg too late
