Portrait of the French mechanical engineer and inventor born 1754 in Amiens,died 1835 Jouy,near Versailles. The son of an organ builder,he constructed and developed organs,harpsichords and other musical instruments. He also made jewellery,constructed a steam powered road vehicle in 1790 and designed and built other steam engines. In France he is credited with the invention of marine screw propulsion and the tubular steam boiler. These formed part of his patent for a steam driven boat of 1803 which was never built due to his financial problems.
