19th century engraving of the first commercially successful steamboat,on the Hudson River NY. Designed by Robert Fulton,it made its first voyage in 1807 with a run of 150 miles from New York to Albany at an average speed of 5 miles per hour. It was constructed by the ship-builder Charles Brown and had two side paddle wheels driven by steam engines made by Boulton and Watt. The flat-bottomed hull and mid-mounted paddle wheels set the design for future river steamboats in the USA. After design modifications the Clermont became the first steamer to establish a regular route and regular transportation of passengers and merchandise in America | |
