Royal Observatory,Greenwich,UK. This observatory was founded in 1675. It was the first purpose-built research institution in Britain,and for centuries was the centre of astronomical and meteorological research in the UK. At right is the Greenwich Meridian (also called the Prime Meridian),which marks zero degrees longitude. At left is Flamsteed House,the oldest of the Observatory's buildings,which was designed by Christopher Wren.
