Three Mile Island incident. US President Jimmy Carter (born 1924) in a limousine leaving Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power station near Harrisburg,Pennsylvania,USA,on 30 April 1979,to travel to nearby Middletown. An accident at TMI Unit 2 on 28 March 1979 led to a nuclear incident. It was caused by a loss of reactor cooling water that resulted in the exposure of fuel rods,some of which melted,burned through the reactor chamber lining and sank to the floor of the reactor building.
