Child with rickets. Sharecropper's child suffering from rickets and malnutrition,in Arkansas,USA,in August 1935 during the Great Depression. Rickets is a softening of the bones caused by a deficiency of vitamin D and/or certain minerals. The child's distended abdomen is a sign of malnutrition. Sharecropping is where farm workers are provided with a share of the crops produced. Photographed at Wilson cotton plantation,Mississippi County,by US photographer Arthur Rothstein (1915-1985). Rothstein's work was for a US government photography project that documented everyday American life between 1935 and 1944
