John Mitchel,mayor of New York
John Purroy Mitchel (1879-1918),mayor of New York,using a telephone. Mitchel studied at Columbia University and then graduated in 1901 from the New York Law School. He led investigations into several politicians,and then entered politics himself. He was a reformer and was elected as part of what was known as the Fusion Party. He served as mayor of New York City from 1914 to 1917,losing his bid for re-election. He died while training as a pilot for World War I. This photograph,which dates from 17 April 1914,is from the Bain News Service,one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries
