Eurasian shrew (Sorex araneus),19th-century artwork. This insectivorous mammal is also known as the common shrew. This plate is from a collection of pencil sketches and watercolours of British mammals by British naturalist and explorer Edward Adrian Wilson (1872-1912). This artwork is dated 1895,when Wilson was a student at Cambridge University (hence the 'Camb. painting' note). The note also refers to The Crippetts,a favourite area in the Cotswolds where Wilson grew up and where he would sketch his observations of nature. Wilson died on the British Antarctic Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott | |
