Piltdown Man reconstructions 1 and 2. The discovery of these remains (cranium,teeth and mandible) was announced in 1912 by amateur archaeologist Charles Dawson. At left is the ape-like reconstruction by Natural History Museum palaeontologist Arthur Smith Woodward. At right is the human-like reconstruction by Scottish anatomist and anthropologist Arthur Keith. Scientists argued over which reconstruction was correct,but in 1953 Piltdown Man was shown to be a fraud. The skull fragments were human,the jaw from an orangutan,and the teeth from a chimpanzee
