Lithographic frontis to Capt. R.T. Claridge "Hydropathy or The Cold Water Cure as practiced by Vincent Priessnitz,at Graefenberg,Silesia,Austria",published by James Madden and Co. 1843. The image shows the hydropathic (later hydrotherapy) practices of Graefenberg. Claridge's book was a runaway success going through many editions in its first year and establishing the treatment in Britain. One enthusiastic early convert was Charles Darwin who wanted to control his many undiagnosed symptoms. He first tried Dr. James Gully's Water Cure Establishment at Malvern and felt it helped. When Darwin's beloved daughter Annie grew ill he took her to Malvern and Dr. Gully in March 1851 but she died there on the 23rd of April. Darwin was with his family at the Ilkley Wells Hydropathic establishment when the "Origin of Species" went on sale in 1859 | |
