Reverend Thomas Malthus, author of "An Essay on the Principle of Population". Mezzotint with later hand colouring painted and engraved by John Linnell, published 1834 by Dominic Colnaghi. Malthus was concerned that "The power of population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for man". Malthus thought that the pressures of population growth would preclude endless progress towards a utopian human society. In 1838 Darwin read the sixth edition of Malthus' famous 'Essay on the Principle of Population' and found first inspiration for a mechanism to drive his own theory of evolution by natural selection | |
