The Entomologist. Rare copper print with original hand colouring, drawn by George Spratt, printed by George Madely, and sold individually as part of a series through Charles Tilt's Fleet Street print shop. George Spratt (1784-c.1840) was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons but also an artist. He illustrated the two volume "Flora Medica" (1829). The entomologist is here made-up of the objects of his own fascination. A Garden tiger moth makes up his body, caterpillars his arms, his hat and hair a grasshopper, beetle and damselfly. He carries a 'tong net' to catch a blue butterfly. A small snapping net typical of the time | |
