Contemporary coloured lithograph by Carl Brotdmann of "Der Orang-Uttang","Der Hooloch" and "Der Shimpanzee" appearing as table 1 in "Naturhistorische Abbinldungen der Saeugethiere" by Heinrich Rudolph Schinz 1824. Though the Orang utang had been quite accurately drawn since the time of Tulpius (1641),their rarity and resemblance to humans still caused artists confusion well into the nineteenth century. This Chimpanzee is still holding a walking stick as had become the norm in earlier "wild man of the woods" representations | |
