1809 "Black Oran Otan" copper engraving from "Zoological Lectures Delivered at the Royal Institution". This is a reprint of Tyson's first figure of a chimpanzee which was a dissection in 1698 with a consideration of 'wild satyrs'. Tyson came to the conclusion that the chimpanzee had more in common with man than with monkeys, particularly with respects to its brain. This was to be an area of contention between Richard Owen and T.H. Huxley during the evolution debates of the 1860's. In this version, but not the original by Tyson, ivy is wrapped around the chimp to hide its presumably too human private parts. By 1809 the chimpanzee still remained somewhat mysterious in Britain. It was not until 1835 that one called "Tommy" lived for any time in a zoo (see other prints in this collection) | |
