Francis Galton (16th February 1822 - 17th January 1911),investigator into human variation and biometry. Half cousin of Charles Darwin. Pioneer of the Eugenics movement. Galton's achievements included investigations into 'nature versus nurture' in inheritance (see 'Hereditary Genius' 1869) during which time he also pioneered the use of finger print identification, questionnaires, surveys and statistical analysis in human research. His conclusions of genetic superiority for Nordic and Anglo Saxon peoples is now discredited. The British and American Eugenics program for genetically improving the human race by state intervention in reproduction was abandoned after the associated horrors of Nazi Germany | |
