Soil samples collected from an archaeological excavation are placed in a bath of running water. Small particles of carbonised wood, animal bones, shells, seeds etc float away from the heavier earth and clays to be collected by sieves for later microscopic analysis. The residue is then washed and inspected by eye to retrieve any items which may have escaped the flotation process | |
