John James Wild (1812-1900),HMS Challenger artist,at Kerguelen Island. Wild was born Jean Jacques Wild in Switzerland. He was the official artist on the voyage of HMS Challenger (1872-1876),emigrating to Melbourne in 1881. Photographed during the Challenger voyage. This scientific expedition, organised by the Royal Society, spent four years surveying the world's oceans, visiting Kerguelen in 1874. The ship was equipped with a dark room, enabling development of the photographs taken of the lands and peoples encountered. It is thought that this expedition was the first to include routine photography as well as an official artist | |
