Ant mound. Artwork of an ant mound, the base from which these colonial eusocial insects forage for food and in which their larvae (young) are raised. The mound is shown as a cutaway artwork, showing the queen (bottom) laying eggs from her swollen abdomen. The eggs are then taken to other chambers and cared for until they hatch into larvae, which then fed until they pupate into the adult forms. The column of ants at left is bringing food and building materials to the mound. At lower left,an insect is being dissected, and an aphid has been caught on the plant at centre | |
