Simulated microscopic black hole. Computer simulation of particle collisions between very high energy cosmic ray particles. It is thought that such collisions could occur in the atmosphere and result in the production of microscopic black holes. These black holes only exist for a tiny fraction of a second before decaying into ordinary particles and are not easily observable in the atmosphere. The ATLAS Experiment as CERN will be used to investigate such an event. The image here shows two protons that have collided at immense speeds (centre) and the tracks of particles that have resulted. ATLAS will be able to detect if any microscopic black holes were created by the collision | |
